I am reminded that it is Matt's birthday. Matt is my cousin's little lad. When he was still a baby he had a health scare and ended up in hospital.
We had seen him a week or two before he was taken ill. My mum went to the hospital ward to see him. She asked a nurse where she could find baby Matthew and was given directions.
When I got back from work that day mum was at my house and looked shell shocked. She told me about going to see Matthew. She said the poor child looked really poorly. She said he had lost loads of weight. She said he was lifeless. She also felt she couldn't leave him as there was no sign of my cousin or her sister (my aunt and Matt's grandma) and ended up spending all afternoon there but eventually had to come away as my dad needed the car. She declared that you 'Would never know it was the same child.'
Mum said to me she felt she would have to go back and see 'The poor little mite' again and so the next afternoon she was once again in the hospital headed for baby Matthew's room. As she trotted down the corridor she heard my aunt call her name and turned to see my aunt and cousin in another room. 'Oh' says mum, 'You've moved then?' 'What do you mean?' they asked. 'Moved you into a different room' says mum. 'No' they say, 'We've been here all the time.' So in fact, not only would you not know it was the same child but it was NOT the same child. Yes, my mum had spent all afternoon with a baby she had never seen before in her life.
We never did find out who the other baby Matthew was.
So much for hospital security.
Dumbass

Americans have coined some pretty handy words, including "dumbass". I must
admit that I was a "dumbass" yesterday night.

didnt anyone else pop into the see the other lad? i find that a bit sad for some reason.
No one else came that afternoon, and yes, when I had stopped laughing at my mum I was glad that she had given that poor baby some care and attention.
Does sound like she did more for the other kid, unattended and alone, than for Matt that had relatives there.
Might be a good activity - visiting people at the hospital that have no visitors.
Seems rather topical what with that recent American story of the two girls in a car smash, and they identified the 'wrong one' as being dead, and they only realised they'd got it wrong after the surivor came round from a coma.
What a silly mum! has some of her silliness rubbed off on you? I bet it has!
Thats hilarious!
Hospital security? The security is usually a porter with a penchant for Die Hard movies!
Ours actually carry handcuffs though. and some of them could be considered quite yummy if you squint a little!
That was brilliantly funny but sad that that poorly little boy had no visitors.
I thought it was a happy ending but Cookie has brought me back to earth with a well made point.
Good to find this as like a div I followed someone's incorrect link and didn't realise I was in the wrong place.
Come on Eng-er-land.
Awh, I always like the idea of visiting those without visitors. Like being a grandparent/grandchild to someone who has none. Or a mentor to those without support.
So the story is both touching and funny. What a great, and typical, JJ story!
Joe, Moo, ST and Lisa, it is sad to think of people in hospital who have no visitors...and horrible if they are just little babies.
Fatalist, I hadn't heard that story. I hope they hadn't already had the funeral for the wrong person.
YP, there are certain family characteristics....
Nat, you have distracted me with mention of handcuffs...
And I have to ask Spunky...where have you actually been????
